Thanks for this interesting thought provoking article. For me Photography as an interest (or a hobby) can also be simply enjoying the art, usually the art of others, usually famous photographers. Just like one may be interested in say Impressionist painters, or Art Deco buildings without necessarily being a painter or an architect. Personally I love looking at,and learning about the best photographers as well as spending some time taking photos myself. I admit to enjoying the technicalities of cameras too although I am mless and less tempted to acquire the latest gear.
