In a lot of cases this is definitely true. There is a “murder house" in a small Iowa town that fits this exactly. But in this case, there is no town. But a lot of it does come from Midwest and Nebraska specific ghost hunters. And any news articles you see on it in the past 20 years fall back on the " I don't know, it could be haunted” ridiculousness.
